World Series round 6: Blue Lagoon Pembrokeshire
This September I was whisked away for the weekend to watch the Red Bull Cliff diving World Series in Pembrokeshire.
On Friday morning we travelled from Barnsley to Wales ready for the event on the Saturday. Although the event was on over the whole weekend, we’d only managed to get tickets for the practice dives and first round of the competition.
As it was such a long drive, it had been decided that we stayed in a farm house a couple of hours away from the event. This meant that we could explore a bit more of the coast, and didn’t have to drive for 7 hours in a row!
Saturday morning came, and after a quick breakfast we began the drive to the Blue Lagoon. During the journey I gave the others a quick photography lesson on shutter speeds. Although I didn’t really know what to expect I knew that the divers wouldn’t be in the air for long.
We arrived at the Blue Lagoon and walked through the car park to the viewing areas on the cliff. It was such a beautiful place. It began as a slate quarry, but when the walls were breached it was transformed into this gorgeous lagoon. The platforms attached to the cliff face were 27.5m and 20m high, with just 25m of water to drop into.
The divers were already into their practice dives, jumping and twirling gracefully through the air before landing into the water. During the first round it was decided by the competition officials that the weather forecast for Sunday was too dangerous, so the full competition would be held in one day.
Sitting in the sunshine and watching the divers it was hard to believe that it was going to be unsafe.
Half way through the competition there was a surprise visit from two Red Bull pilots, giving an amazing air show between rounds.
The final of this round saw Michal Navratil win the men’s competition with 500.75 points, while Rhiannan Iffland won the women’s competition with 760 points. Overall Gary Hunt is still in the lead, for the men and Rhiannan Iffland for the women with just three more stops to go.
