What to Expect from a Baby Session

One of the packages we offer at Charlotte Elizabeth Photography is our Bump to Baby Package. Included in this package is a maternity session, a newborn session and two 10×8 prints. Today we wanted to talk about what to expect from your baby session.

The baby session is all about your newborn and documenting their first few weeks as part of your family.

Before the session

At your maternity or ‘bump’ session we’ll book a few provisional dates for your newborn shoot. When your little one arrives we’ll confirm a date and time that suits you.

On the day of your newborn session the most important thing to do is be prepared. Make sure you have enough nappies, dummies, bottles and formulas (if you’re not breastfeeding). Also pack a minimum of three outfits – just in case. If there are any blankets, toys, or anything that your little one loves make sure you pack those too.

The second most important thing to do is relax. If you’re tense baby will pick up on that. We have plenty of time and tonnes of patience – you will definitely leave with some beautiful images of your family.

Who to bring

We love to involve both parents in the newborn session. You’ll never get this time back, so capturing baby with you is important.

If you’re bringing an older sibling, particularly toddlers, we advise bringing something for them to do while the session is happening. Baby sessions can last a while and although we do have activities in the studio it’s always good to have some extra entertainment.

What to Expect from a Baby Session

During the session

Newborn sessions are always dictated by baby. We can encourage them to sleep, or get into a certain position, but they will ultimately do as they please. This means every session is unique. We always schedule in time for feeds, changes and tears so a two hour session is very common.

Bringing the same props that were used in the maternity session is highly encouraged. This allows us to capture some ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots which work really well together. It also gives some comparison as baby develops and grows.
