An easy to follow, step by step guide to creating an origami Christmas tree. These trees can be made with plain or decorative paper. To make your origami Christmas tree extra special, why not let your children decorate the paper first?
Step 1.
As with most origami creations, you’ll need to start with a square piece of paper.
Fold the paper in half, corner to corner. Open it out.
Step 2.
Fold the paper in half again, using the opposite corners. Open it out.
You should have an ‘x’ shape going through your paper.
Step 3.
Fold the paper in half, left to right. Open it out.
Step 4.
Fold the paper in half, top edge to bottom edge. Do not open it.
Step 5.
This is the most difficult step. Hold up your paper by the corner fold.
Push your side folds into the middle. The creases at the front and back will ‘pop’ out, creating a square.
Step 6.
Place your square back onto the table.
Lift up the top flap. Open the flap out by putting your finger (or a pencil) inside. Make sure you reach the top of the paper as this will be the point of your origami Christmas tree. As you remove your finger, flatten the paper down.
Step 7.
Fold the flap over, and repeat with the next flap.
Keep folding over until all your flaps have been flattened.
Step 8.
Your tree should now be taking shape. We just have some excess paper at the bottom.
Turn your tree on its side, and tuck away the excess. Remember, your tree stands up by the base so it is important to try and make these folds as straight as possible.
Step 9.
Stand your origami Christmas tree up. Smooth down the creases to reinforce its shape.
Decorate if you wish!
